Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko and American negotiator Llewis Thompson are going to begin talks to prevent an increase in nuclear arms for both countries.

80 new apartments were planned to go up in Springfield Pennsylvania.

A rabbi, a Catholic priest and a Protestant minister worked together to publish a book protesting the Vietnam War. Their collaboration was intended to gain the attention of different audiences.

Dr. Johnson, the president, of United Political Action Committee of Chester and Delaware Counties spoke to civil rights groups about discrimination., including how African Americans were being denied housing for no reason in West Chester

At the Tredyffrin Township board meeting the hazards on Swedesford Road were discussed and possible solutions were addressed.

Three intersections along Route 202 were deemed hazardous and Township Supervisor Strittmitter developed a plan to increase safety including changing the traffic pattern and the speed limit.

West Chester University was in the process of obtaining easement rights on 17 properties along S. New Street below Rosedale Avenue in an effort to connect its two campuses.

"Vietnamese Build Barrier Across Border" in Daily Local News (April 15, 1967) [Notes by Andrew Danziger, 2011]

The US soldiers struggled to keep the North Vietnamese from invading by crossing the Ben Hai River. This led to increased communist activity in the Quang Tri province. As a result the US evacuacted 20,000 civillians in an attempt to create a no man's land.

The Liberal Democratic Party lost its influence in Tokyo as a member of the Communist party won the election. This was an issue because it could have affected the United States relationship with Tokyo and Japan.

In Harrisburg, Governor Raymond Shafer proposed a plan including a railroad spanning from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia and would also increase the amount of buses for public transportation.

"In West Chester NCAAP Heads Fair Housing Negotiations" in Daily Local News (April 16, 1967) [Notes by Andrew Danziger, 2011]

Mr. Brown made an argument by the NAACP for a policy change in regards to fair housing. The NAACP also wanted a policy change to focus on education for underprivileged children. He also found it problematic that only one third of West Chester's African American community was registered to vote.

"Chesterville's Serviceman is Named Soldier of the Month at Arsenal" in Daily Local News (April 28, 1967) [Notes by Andrew Danziger, 2011]

Wayne Meeks was named soldier of the month for April 1967. He was chosen for his "superior military bearing, leadership, conduct and attention to duty." At his ceremony he was given a letter of citation and a $25 dollar U.S. savings bond.

The United States launched two satellites into outer space from Cape Kennedy in an attempt to monitor nuclear activities in communist countries, including China in particular.

"Vandalism of Churches Concerns NAACP Unit" in Daily Local News (May 3, 1967) [Notes by Andrew Danziger, 2011]

After a series of vandalism attacks on churches including Enron Baptist and Disciples Grove the NAACP became extremely concerned with the aggression of young people targeting churches due to descrimination.

"Why Mercedes-Benz has the Nerve to Charge $4305 for a Car With A Funny Sounding Engine" in Daily Local News (, 1967) [Notes by Andrew Danziger, June 5, 2011]

Mercedes-Benz' new car, the 200 D, was a cutting edge car for its time. It got 30 miles per gallon, had several under-the-hood improvements, came with better brakes, was a safer car and it had several other improvements as well.

The Venus Probe was launched from Cape Kennedy in an attempt to survey the Earth and overtake a Russian probe.

"Rusk is Optimistic that U.S., Russia can Agree on a Pact to Ban the Spread of Nuclear Arsenals" in Daily Local News (June 28, 1967) [Notes by Andrew Danziger, 2011]

Secretary of State Dean Rusk came back from a meeting with Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko and believed they would soon agree to stop building nuclear arsenals in both countries.

"Negro Astronaut Named. No Racial Tension Seen in Space Work" in Daily Local News (July 1, 1967) [Notes by Andrew Danziger, 2011]

Robert H. Lawrence was named as an astronaut for the crew of the next space mission. Lawrence was the first African American astronaut. This helped ease racial tensions.

Pope Paul VI was trying to ease political tensions between the Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox branch, tensions which had existed for over 1,000 years.

With the change in technology Central Chester County opened its own tech school to teach and train students for the new jobs in the tech world. After some setbacks the school was still going to open on time.

NAACP created a program for the education of African American children.

Two scholarships were granted to United States Vietnam veterans out of gratitude for their service.

The Young Women's Christian Association of West Chester announces its fall program. Most programs are scheduled to start on September 25th and run through December 8th.

The West Chester branch of the American Association of University Women announced its entire program for the coming year. The announcement was made at a recent West Chester State College executive board meeting.

West Chester phases out old trash collection schedule in order to move to a new five day work week schedule. Businesses and residences should no longer place trash outside on Saturday as trash will no longer be picked up on Saturday.

A furnace blaze at the Industrial Metal Treating Corp. resulted with all three West Chester fire unites responding. The blaze occurred at 5:23 PM and caused significant damage to the building.

Yesterday morning West Chester Police arrested a young man who is wanted by authorities in West Virginia. The young man is wanted by West Virginia authorities because of robbery charges that have been placed against him.

Over 30 European students arrived in West Chester on Saturday. West Chester is the first stop for these students in their tour of the eastern United States. The European students worked as camp counselors and because of their great work were granted a tour of the eastern States.

West Chester State College will start classes Thursday with the academic architecture to support a university. The drive for University status was announced in June and West Chester State College has made changes to the academics in order to comply with what is needed to gain university status.

The United States Navy has started a new program for ex-enlisted navy personnel. The program is for ex-enlisted men who would like to re-enlist in the navy. Personnel seeking to re-enlist must have been out of the navy for at least three months, but no longer than three years. Information on this program can be found at the post office in West Chester.

The West Chester Area School District Is looking to build a new East Junior High School. With the current bids that have been submitted it looks like it will cost the West Chester Area School District roughly 3,436,700.

Kenneth R. Ford, age 20, of West Chester was arrested Sunday for possession of marijuana.

Several new and creative activities are now included on the Young Woman's Christian Association's fall schedule. In order to take part in these events, advanced registration is essential for all YWCA classes and activities.

The college administration at West Chester State College has embarked on an exacting course. If completed properly. It will take the college to the status of a university.

Two more West Chester Policemen have submitted resignations. Officer Charles O. Bennett is leaving the force to accept another position and the other officer, Gary Shank, did not provide a reason for his resignation.

West Chester Borough Council voted unanimously on a legislation that would bring injustices to an end. The Council acted quickly and demonstrated its desire to do the right thing on behalf of the negro population of West Chester.

The West Chester Borough Council last night passed The Fair Housing Ordinance that will put an end to discrimination in the housing and rental market in West Chester. The Fair Housing Ordinance will force equality for all people trying to buy or rent a housing facility.

Members of the Women's Democratic Club of Chester County held a meeting at 831 S. High St. West Chester.

Marvin Lee Farmer Jr., 19, escaped from the Chester County Hospital while in iron chains yesterday. Marvin has been taken to the hospital several times since his arrest due to him coughing up blood.

The West Chester Zoning Board has taken three appeals under consideration because of testimonies received during a hearing. The hearing where the testimonies were heard was held last Monday.

A fire destroyed the Pennsylvania Railroad Freight Station in West Chester yesterday afternoon. The entire Freight building was destroyed in a matter of hours.

The Mayor of West Chester, Charles Andress, presented seven awards of merit commendations to five West Chester Borough Policemen Yesterday.

Carl T. Rowan spoke at West Chester State College last night. Rowan talked to the students about how the civil rights strife is worse than the Vietnam conflict.

Wayland K. Whittaker, 19, of 202 W. Chesnut St. West Chester faces charges of carrying a concealed deadly weapon.

The West Chester State College Biology Club plans to show a film almost every other Saturday at 10 AM. The Biology club plans to start the films this week.

Fred S. Wood passed away yesterday leaving a great deal of sorrow for the people who knew him. The West Chester State College Chairman of the Board of Trustee's, Charles E. Swope, was especially affected by his passing.

A super-modern destroyer was put under the command of Cdr. Louis R. Lester. The destroyer, USS John Paul Jones, is suspected to be deployed to Vietnam after launch.

Police are investigating a burglary reported this morning at the P and G Restaurant. The P and G is located on Linden Street in West Chester. [Purple & Gold]

Two West Chester youths were arrested last night. The police apprehended the two youths for the alleged beating of a man on Saturday night.

Terms of an agreement for the extension of a water main to reach a new school and the final discussion on the proposed fair housing ordinance were discussed yesterday at the West Chester Borough Council.

After a fire destroyed the original freight office for the Pennsylvania Railroad on September 15th, passengers and freight were consolidated. Now West Chester has a new office for handling freight on the Pennsylvania railroad.

The Fair Housing Ordinance gained unanimous approval by the West Chester Borough Council last night. The final draft was mostly identical to the original one that was sent to the council by the West Chester NAACP. The mayor signed the ordinances into law immediately.

Army CWO. Joseph Gelinas, 39, was found dead in his hotel room in Saigon "under mysterious circumstances". He left for Vietnam on October 4th leaving his wife and daughter who lived with him at 1650 West Chester Pike.

A building permit was issued this morning for a multi-million dollar apartment project [on the Convent property between East Marshall Street and Maple Avenue]. The site will total 318 luxury units in West Chester when completed.

A transportation problem and a pair of Title 1 projects for non-public schools were discussed last night. The board added three buses to help with the school's transportation problem.

A new hall, named Ramsey Hall, is the newest dorm at West Chester State College. The new dorm will be an all-woman's dormitory and is named after Professor Emeritus Dorothy Ramsey.

Volunteer fire fighters battled a fire at 309 S. Brandywine St. in West Chester from 11:25 PM until 2 AM. The fire caused an estimated $5,000 in damage to the building.

The famed Berlin Mozart Choir has chosen West Chester as one of 32 stops and will be performing at West Chester State College on Sunday evening.

When the snow starts to fall, the Pennsylvania Department of Highway says that they will be ready. The Department of Highway has over 10,000 tons of chemical salt prepared to keep the roads safe.

West Chester students have joined the campaign of the United Fund of Greater West Chester. The United Fund of Greater West Chester has a goal of $226,563, but they have only raised about 73.5 percent of their goal.

Good Fellowship Ambulance Club is facing a financial dilemma. Also the Bell Telephone request for the property on the south west corner of Magnolia and S. Walnut street to be rezoned from R-7 to C-1 was approved.

The final step to the Fair Housing Ordinance has been taken by the West Chester Borough Council. Five people have been appointed to serve on a commission on Human Relations. The new commission will enforce the Fair Housing code which bans discrimination in the housing market.

The West Chester Area League of Women Voters meeting last night erupted into a heated discussion. The discussion was on the issue of white-black confrontation in the country.

The State Highway Department will start to receive bids on December 8th for reconstruction work to be done on the West Chester By-pass.

The West Chester Zoning Board of Adjustment heard four appeals last night. One of the appeals was for the approval for the construction of a 62 unit apartment complex.

The United Fund of Greater West Chester is short of its goal by $45,591, or 20 percent. The goal they are looking to get has to be achieved by December 1st.

A head-on clash occurred yesterday over a proposed plan for an extensive redevelopment project. The redevelopment project was centered in the borough of West Chester.

A proposed zoning change that would replace the Goshen Baptist church with a gasoline station was heard by the West Goshen Board of Supervisors.

West Goshen Township Zoning Board heard two petitions Wednesday night. Two proposed apartment building were brought before the Zoning Board along with a proposed Laundry facility.

The West Chester Church of Holy Trinity attracted over 175 people, both black and white, last night to their event. The event discussed racial tension in school, church, work and other areas.

A rotating sign located on a used car lot and the Newman Club of West Chester State College were the subject of a two hour hearing last night. The zoning appeals were taken before the West Goshen Township Zoning Board.

Gov. Raymond P. Shafer announced four interim appointments to be made to the Board of Trustees of West Chester State College yesterday.
