Expression
Expression is a key element in all music.  It is what makes music an art as opposed to a science.  Expression can be denoted by the composer or the performer can take liberties with the written music.  When a performer does this, it is called interpretation.  Part of Eugene Ormandy's interpretation of Sheherazade is to use extreme rubato, or slowing of the tempo, at sections in the fourth movement.  To hear an example of this, click here.  (Note: None of the listening links will work unless you have the Voyager CDLink Application and the CD!)  None of these instances are indicated by Rimsky-Korsakov, but Ormandy inserts them to individualize the music.
