THE
OF COMPUTERS IN EDUCATION

The
invention came about as early as the 1930's. It's an invention
that has overtaken a slate board and chalk, paper and pencil, and
typewriters. Today, classroom is slowly, but surely filling the
roo m with this invention, the computer. 
The following is a brief timeline of computers and it's relation to education.
| 1930's | John Vincent Atanasoff built a machine that is similar to today's version of the computer |
| 1945 | The first electronic computer called, ENIAC was designed. It was big enough to fill a large room. |
| 1950's | Researchers were grappling with the idea of incorporation to computers in the classroom. |
| 1966 | Pennsylvania State University began to study the effectiveness of presenting vocational/technical curricula via the computer. |
| 1964 | A research and development center was established at the University of Pittsburgh, with one of its goals to conduct experimental work in the development of CAI*. |
| 1965 | Florida State University linked to the IBM Watson Research Center in Yorktown, N.Y., to form a computer center, having as its goals the comparative evaluation of CAI and instruction and the implementation of CAI as a university instructional technique from nursery school through the post-doctoral level of instruction. |
| 1965 | Harvard University began a program to develop, apply, and evaluate CAI |
| 1965 | . The University of Texas began the development of CAI instructional programs teleprocessed to other universities and public schools in the Texas-Louisiana region. |
| 1965 | The Philadelphia School System began implementing CAI in their school instructional programs. |
| 60'S & 70's | High school teachers were using computers to help their students learn computer-programming skills. |
| 1984 | The Information Technology Education for the Commonwealth was started. It created Regional Computer Resource Centers, which provided courses for in-service teachers to receive help with incorporating computers into their lessons. |
| 1997 | President Clinton had a vision of using computers in the classroom as much as blackboards are used. |
| 1999 | President Clinton has a goal of connecting every classroom in America to the internet. |
